Budding has begun

Budding has begun

Budding is one of the most fascinating phases of the entire vegetative cycle. One of the fundamental reasons is because, together with crying, it represents the beginning of a new vegetative cycle of the vine and therefore of the new season.

Budding consists of the swelling of the buds and subsequently the emergence of the bud after the opening of the bracts. The process is controlled by external and internal stimuli and temperature is fundamental. Budding occurs when the air temperature reaches the minimum vegetation threshold called vegetative zero.

On average, for the vine, an average temperature of around 10 °C is considered to achieve budding. In San Polo we decided to carry out late pruning, this slowed down the budding, which occurred about two weeks later than the budding time of the normally pruned vines.
