Planting cover crops
We have been looking forward to this day with great enthusiasm. The team is still exhausted from the harvest but today they are ready for another important component of vineyard care: cover crops.
Cover crops are essential to the agronomic management of San Polo’s vineyards and are one of the key efforts in a production philosophy born from absolute respect for the territory. This soil fertilization technique is completely natural and involves seeding specific plants between the rows of vines. This process is aimed at creating a balance in the soil without the use of chemicals and making the soil hospitable for the vines, especially as they restart their vegetative growth. This technique facilitates the vine’s development by giving vitality to the soil. The first step was fertilizing with compost, an organic substance which gives nutrients to the soil. Today we have sown a mix of seeds, mainly brassicaceae and flowers which will be cut before they bloom. They will be left to dry out for a few days and will then be incorporated into the top 25cm of soil. A truly natural fertilizer.
