Vignavecchia
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Made only in select vintages, this is the estate’s smallest and most prized cru. Produced from a tiny, west-facing, 2-hectare (5 acres) vineyard planted on a steep hill in 1988, this is the winery’s oldest and most prized vineyard block.
Climate trend
One of the best vintages in the last twenty years. The entire growing cycle of the vine took place under the best possible conditions. A cold winter with frequent heavy rainfall and low temperatures gave way to a dry spring with slightly above average temperatures , enabling uniform budding and perfect flowering. Showers in the summer months were scarce but fortunately heavy, which made it possible to carry out sustainable and environmentally friendly pest and disease management. Hot, sunny days with excellent day-night temperature variations enabled the bunches to achieve ideal ripening by the end of September: the berries were perfectly healthy and acidity was high, despite elevated sugar concentration. The harvest of Sangiovese, which was completed by the end of the month, delivered perfectly healthy grapes with a very thick skin, a prerequisite for long macerations and for wines with great ageing potential.

Wine Enthusiast

“Aromas of pine, blue flower, wild herb and menthol take shape on the fragrant nose. The firm, linear palate delivers Marasca cherry, spiced cranberry, licorice and tobacco before finishing on a hint of coffee. Tightly wound, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity keep it well balanced, but it’s still youthfully austere and needs time to fully develop. Drink 2026–2046. Trinchero Family Estates. Cellar Selection.” —Kerin O’KeefeGuida Oro i Vini di Veronelli
This is the smallest production and the most precious of the new single-vineyard wines envisaged by the lovely and dynamic First Lady of Italian wine, Marilisa Allegrini (a personal hero of mine). Her San Polo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vignavecchia is a rich and tightly compact Sangiovese with layered aromas of dark fruit, ripe cherry, cola, spice and potting soil. These old vines are planted on a very steep and labor-intensive slope measuring about two hectares at a breezy and cool 450 meters above sea level. The soils are rich in Galestro and a complicated mix of minerals that all magically add to the sharpness and the direct personality of this 3,000-bottle release. Thanks to those evident tannins, I'm expanding my suggested drinking window.Guida Oro i Vini di Veronelli
Guida Essenziale ai Vini d'Italia di Daniele Cernilli - DoctorWine
A very rich and rather opulent 2016 Brunello, offering cherries, dark berries and walnut shells with dark chocolate and dark mushrooms. It’s full and layered with chewy tannins and a tight finish. Old vines. Give it time to open. Try after 2024.3 stelle oro, 95
